Until 1971,
Hania was the main city of Crete. Districts of Topanas, Kastelli and Chiones, with their pedestrianized streets, around the venitian port, are very pleasant. We particularly like Topanas. With Retimno, Hania is one of our prefered towns.
Completly to the west, at about 17 km from
Kissamos (Castelli),
Phalassarna offer a very nice beach of sand. Practically not built-up, the place has a small archaeological site, ancient roman , which is not along the sea anymore!
To the south, we find
Sfinari, a small quiet village along the sea. More to the south, we reach the
monastery Khrissoskalitissas. At least, a few kilometers further,we arrive at
Elafonissi, a beach of sand with pink shimmers, facing a small island (the island of Elafonissi). Don't miss it!
Hania is also the starting point for the
Samaria's Gorges. We wanted to make them in april a few years ago, but the only way to make them was to join an organized excursion for 300 F (45 €) per person. We gave up, but we will make them one day.
